There in the ocean in my chest, FAA Project Room2026
If we ask what distinguishes the sea from the land, and remove the obvious (water) from the question, then depth will remain as its most defining characteristic. When we look within ourselves, we are filled with an inner, unseen ocean that extends into our deepest layers and exists as a reflection of the planet we are shaped after. These emotional waters ebb and flow like the tides in relation to each of our personal functions and dysfunctions. When the body is limited, or when illness causes this ocean to heave and break in turbulent, chaotic rhythms, a division of extreme movements can create violent waves within an isolated, passive body.
There in the ocean within showcases this inner, unseen ocean in its full depth, and that utilizes the naturally reflective nature of my physical practice, where dynamic and emotional surfaces are created through the layering of precious metals, snakeskin, dried flowers, insect wings, etc.
A figure modeled on the artists own body floats in an inner aquatic environment that pulsates, trembles and moves. By subverting performative qualities and instead highlighting the body's absence and passivity, the unseen struggle of the self is made visible amidst the body's inner chaos.
The spaces pairs a large centred screen with the phyisical paper works that make up the video’s digital landscape. Caught in fishing net and hung with fishing hooks the vignettes highlight stilness and self in the dynamic emotional turbulence.
